Financial Overview

Thank you to all those who have supported us.  We are aiming to be the most efficient possible. As Masarang HK Society is run by volunteers, we aim ensure that as much as possible of every donation is sent to support the projects directly.

In order to remain as transparent as possible we will publish our audited annual reports on this page.

 
2019 Highlights

We began this year with a clear sense of our purpose and a firm plan for what Masarang HK needed to achieve during the year. We continued to focus on school talks and raise awareness of the need to offer support for Nature. We also offered assistance giving opportunities for HK students and teachers to gain relevant experience and curriculum-relevant material.
We also continued to carry out biodiversity walk and talks in Hong Kong with students, teachers and school communities.

In 2019, the total donated was HK$523,474. 82% of these funds was sent to the Masarang Foundation in Indonesia in order to help prepare for and develop the projects, especially Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue and Education Centre and Tulap Turtle beach. These funds were aimed at improving the experience for school students volunteering at Tasikoki, especially those students from Hong Kong. 13% of the donated funds was sent to the Sintang Orangutan Project, including funds necessary to prepare for the visit by HK teachers.
We received more general donations during 2019, especially from Germany, after Willie won a Bambi award.

We were also pleased to donate funds to the University of Hong Kong Pangolin Project to help with the research and protection for pangolins in Hong Kong.

Our efficiency rate was 87.3% in the 2019 Financial Year. The Masarang HK Society Team remain unpaid volunteers and take no payment.

2018 Highlights

Masarang HK continued to offer talks and take part in school arranged fund raising events as well as offer liaison for school CAS and coursework relevant visits to the projects in Indonesia. Our 2018 financial performance remained steady with total support of HK$424,633.

In 2018, we focused on improving Tasikoki for students, volunteers, staff and visitors as well as improving cages and enrichment for the animals. We also supported Masarang Foundation projects focusing on sustainability and environment protection, including helping the Tulap Turtle beach project.
We also continued to donate funds to support the Sintang orangutan Centre.
This donation of funds represented 85% of the total funds donated. Finance and administration costs associated with fund raising made up for a modest at 3% this year. The remaining 12% of funds was kept as a reserve in order to support a Hong Kong-based wildlife protection program in 2019.

Our efficiency rate was 84.6% in the 2018 Financial Year. The Masarang HK Society Team remain unpaid volunteers and take no payment.

2017 Highlights

In 2017, Masarang HK continued to offer talks and events for schools and education institutions and we continued to focus on raising awareness about sustainability and environment protection throughout Asia, including the biodiversity walk and talks in Hong Kong.

Our funds were distributed in the following way:
45% to the Sintang Orangutan Centre;
45% to the Tasikoki Centre and the Masarang Foundation projects in Indonesia;
5% of the remaining funds were used for volunteer, administration and fundraising costs in Hong Kong.

We were unable to raise as many funds compared to previous years, but we did achieve a greater than 95% efficiency in the 2017 Financial Year. The Masarang HK Society Team remain unpaid volunteers and take no payment.

2016
In the year 2016, we are pleased to report that we have been able to increase our funds raised and to maintain a low administrative overhead.

Our funds are primarily derived from various fundraising activities by Schools in HK, charity gifts sales and general donations. Our funds were distributed broadly as follows: 35% to Sintang Orangutan Project, 35% to Tasikoki Project, 15% to Masarang Foundation in Indonesia for activities including tree planting and the development of the education support programmes. The remaining 15% of funds were used for volunteer, administration and fundraising costs in Hong Kong.

We recorded a general fund surplus for the year 2016 at HKD10,480.

2015
We are very proud that the accompanying audited report shows our efficiency in 2015 was 96.8%.

We managed to keep our administrative expenses at 9.26% of our total overheads. We spent about 96.8 cents for every dollar donated on actual programs that benefit the projects we aim to support.

We are a Hong Kong based Charitable Institution and we were granted tax exemption status under section 88 of the inland Revenue Ordinance on 23 May 2014.

Individual and business donors who are chargeable to salaries tax, personal assessment or profits tax can claim deduction for the aggregate of approved charitable donation up to 35% of the assessable income or profits, as the case may be, in the basis period of a year of assessment. Such aggregate must not be less than $100. (Sections 16D and 26C of the Inland Revenue Ordinance.

“Approved charitable donation” means a donation of money to any charitable institution or trust of a public character, which is exempt from tax under section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance, or to the Government, for charitable purposes. (Section 2 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance)

Members of the public may check the list of charitable institutions and trusts of a public character, which are exempt from tax under section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance as to whether the donations can be claimed for tax deduction.
